The video above is generated from a sound recording of a psychoanalysis session where I mic’ed both myself and a Lacanian therapist. The name of the resulting audio file is “session01_Mono16bit44100.aif”. The video was drawn in real-time using a custom software patch built in Max/MSP/Jitter. The sound file is transcoded into a visual waveform, which deposits the layers of sound over time as pixels into the visual matrix. Those pixels are then displaced and propagated within the subjective image universe by a variety of virtual forces…

Hers is a face I recognize and know intimately.
Sabrina is almost always smiling. She is every smiling white female I see in ads, mail order catalogs, Facebook photos, and family albums. I know her, her image convinces me.
The truth is that I know very little about the woman behind the photograph, the 25-year-old army reservist from Lorton, Virginia, who served at Abu Ghraib prison in 2003. Along with eleven other soldiers, Sabrina Harman was convicted for her participation in the infamous torture scandal, in which Iraqi men and women were brutally attacked by dogs, raped, beaten, and forced to masturbate in elaborate scenes staged for and documented by the camera.
For the past few years, Russian-born and U.S. based artist Anastasia Samoylova has been creating imagery that breaks boundries of conventional photographic genres. Her project, Landscape Sublime, presents hybridized scenes of tabletop collages, and forms a distinct and multi-layered interrogation of photographic aesthetics, online media, and our image saturated culture…
German artist Lotte Reimann’s project Jaunt is a series of web-appropriated imagery that has been edited to function as erotica that blurs the lines of documentary and fantasy . The bulk of the images she uses for this work were sourced froma single group of pictures uploaded online by an annonymous couple who created and shared portraits and self-portraits of themselves engaging in nude poses and sexual behaviors. Combining this imagery with pictures of cars crashing, racing and…
I’ve always been drawn to the majestic details and materials of classical historical buildings, many of which are hidden from view, tucked behind new architecture, or simply overlooked. Often discovered from rooftops or accessible from private views, I feel compelled to capture the slivers of the old, recreate the buildings to make them whole, and restructure them in…
Swedish artist Martin Brink has spent the past several years exploring methods of creating photographic work for web-based distribution. His output is seen in a range of ebooks, gifs, and pdfs, most of which are offered as free downloads, and the image-works he presents are often minimally styled expressions of time, space and movement. His latest completed work, 2014 Walks, is a PDF book that excersizes an exchange between physical and cyber experience…

Many people seem to imagine that when they look at a photograph it transmits some rather objective information to them and then that is the end of the exchange. What has always really interested me is the way that exchange shapes our encounters…
The female form is often viewed as an object of desire. This idea permeates every aspect of popular culture. Pictures in magazines, billboards, and television shows suggest that a woman’s value is measured by her ability to please a man, creating an archetype of femininity characterized by submissiveness, unintelligence, and sex appeal. Bitchglitch is a critical investigation of this misrepresentation of women in contemporary society. Using imagery from …
From the first moment, the city that slides into view is a fragmented world of image assemblies that bears little resemblance to Google’s familiar simulations of moving along the street. At best we accept it as a provisional place of images, flat or curved, which seem to have acquired gravitational force that alternatively attract, or repel us. The whole city mimics our current state of distracted attention where we are surrounded and tempted by images on…
My work questions the importance of movement and time to our perceptions of the landscape, while simultaneously stressing the sublimity of that movement. By layering multiple source images and rearranging the color channels to create the single composite image…
